Saunton Beach offers some of the best surfing conditions in North Devon for beginners. With over 3 miles of sandy coastline, the beach provides plenty of space, meaning smaller crowds and a safer, more relaxed environment for learning to surf.
Our surf lessons at Saunton are suitable for all abilities. Whether it’s your first time on a board or you’re looking to improve specific skills, we recommend starting with a single session. Groups are organised by experience level, so everyone learns alongside surfers of a similar standard.
We welcome all ages. For children under 8 joining a group lesson, we ask that a parent or guardian accompanies them in the water, or alternatively, books a private lesson to ensure the best possible coaching experience.
Lesson Times:
Please arrive 20 minutes before your lesson to allow time to get changed and ready on the beach.
Lessons will begin with a 10–15 minute beach introduction, covering essential safety advice, ocean awareness, board basics, and techniques for paddling, catching waves, and standing up.
All equipment required for surfing is included in your lesson or course price. This includes a board, wetsuit. We can also provide boots and gloves depending on the time of year. Depending on your previous surfing experience and conditions, we have a variety of boards for you to use. Typically if you are a beginner, we will give you a soft foam board as they are more forgiving, buoyant and easier to catch waves on. If you are a more advanced surfer, we can provide other surfboards, depending on your style and desired goals.
